The Herd
Our red, black and Fleckvieh influence Simmental herd consists of 85 cows. Since our start in 1993 we have eliminated a lot of cows that might have worked in other environments. What we are left with are cows that are efficient, fertile, and produce the same. We were fortunate to be given the pick of the Beaver Head Ranch (breeders of BHL Western 36R) herd in 1993 when we started buying purebred Simmental stock. The bulk of our present cow herd are descendants of those initial ten cows.
"Double KL Traveler", a Red Pepper son, was our first major herd sire to have walk our pastures the spring of 1995. Drifting "M" Ranch's strong female foundation was built on his complete genetic package. These Traveler daughters are producing an honest type of Simmental cattle that the industry wants. We are proud to note that up to the Fall of 2003, we still had not culled a "Traveler" daughter in a program that culls 10-15% of the herd.
We have added the best genetics we could find by natural service, artificial insemination, and embryo transplanting females from which Drifting "M" Ranch produces 20 bulls and a select group of females annually for sale. These cattle have thrived in a tough environment and perform well in the pasture, feedlot, and Lord willing, in your breeding program.
The Lease
Drifting "M" Ranch decided to lease it's main cow herd of 70 purebred red and black simmentals to Muirhead Cattle Company of Shelbrook, Saskatchewan in the fall of 2004. The Muirhead family, Ward, Laurie and their sons, Justin and Casey, are calving over 250 cows operating as a fourth generation farm. They hold their annual bull sale in Prince Albert and in additon will be marketing bulls from the Drifting "M" herd via the "Advantage Bull Sale" in Saskatoon. Leasing our base Simmental cow herd to Muirhead Cattle Company has been a natural blend since they have been purchasing seed stock from the Drifitng "M" herd in the past. We have enjoyed their increddible enthusiasm for the simmental breed and look forward to a successful partnership. You're sure to see Muirhead Cattle Company promoting the Simmental breed down the show road throughout the summer and fall.
Drifting "M" Ranch has also begun a lease arrangement with Scissor Creek Cattle Company of Whitewood, Saskatchewan. The Beutler family leased 15 purebred black Simmental bred heifers in the fall of 2005. Mark, along with his Dad and Uncle crop 3,000 acres and care for 500 cows. Within this herd, Mark has developed a powerful nucleus of purebred black Simmetnal cows. Mark's level headed and common sense approach to the purebred Simmental business impresses us very much and we are very pleased to have our genetics walking his pastures.
